This paper reports on instructional efforts to enhance learner engagement in an advanced Japanese listening comprehension course at a Taiwanese university, where passive participation is common. Drawing on theoretical frameworks of engagement, the course was redesigned to incorporate collaborative activities. Three activities were implemented: sharing learning strategies with classmates, exchanging personal responses through drama viewing, and using films to foster cultural understanding and narrative prediction. High levels of engagement were observed, with students actively referencing peers' approaches and deepening self-directed reflection through emotional connection to the materials. However, inhibiting factors were also identified, including disparities in Japanese proficiency, group dynamics, and smartphone distractions. While combining relatable materials with collaborative learning proved effective, addressing individual psychological barriers and optimizing the learning environment remain key directions for future inquiry. |
