We can find out Dr. Chiang's wide and deep concern about society from his early poems. With his love, he became one of the three best doctors in the thoracic internal medicine area in Taiwan, He also has the benevolence to help those who need help. He set a good example for the younger generation Because of this distinguished character, he decided to retire from the basic medical science of lung cancer and then set out on the journey of seeking for deeper life philosophy which was also the unavoidable concern about the social side. Yet he didn't get involved directly but intervened objectively, and because of this level of observation, he created the unique social medical poems in the history of Taiwan modern poetry. Chiang Tzu-Te writes social medical poems with common medical terms to expound personal opinion of social historical events and news. Although every reader has one's own different explanation, others still can't be put on a par with his creative ideas. In the poem "The Cerebrum" he used the cerebrum cells to simulate the members in the society and to advocate that each member has his own opinions and has to cooperate with the others. In the poem "Fart" describes that the mass medium without justice and justness will affect the public and the social groups made with the public; then eventually, the society will become a dead body that leaves nothing but sadness just like the description in the poem "dissention". With the heart of a doctor to love people, groups and the land, his poems naturally couldn't be absent from the history of Taiwanese doctors and became the example for modern doctors to learn from. "In Those Days, When Chiang Wei-Shui Was in Jail" was a poem produced in that way. The situation of Ireland mentioned in the poem was just like the situation in Taiwan nowadays. The intellectuals who "eat Taiwan rice, drink Taiwan water and love nothing but Taiwan" including doctors should try to push people to eliminate the gaps between different opinions and compromise for cooperation to build the future of Taiwan. This is Chiang Tzu-Te, a good and famous doctor with poetical talent, using medical poets to observe instead of intervention for the social concern, and practicing his own preach and never holding back. |
