This paper is based on the relationship between language and culture, focusing on proper nouns place names that have the function of sending cultural messages, through the text of Yanagida Kunio's ''Japanese Past Stories (Part 1)''. It is expected that the results will contribute to Japanese language learning, Japanese vocabulary research, and cross-cultural understanding. The results can be summarized as follows. 1. The Japanese cultural messages sent by place names in proper nouns are more environmentally and historically oriented. 2. Place names from ancient times enhance understanding of Japan’s history, environment, era, and world view 3.The A-type place names imply the environmental view of natural terrain, while the B-type place names show the historical view of the Japanese legal system and modern administrative divisions. 4. People pay more attention to topographic place names related to the natural environment than to administrative division place names. This focus may reflect thinking before the mid-Edo period |
