The Yomei Bunko manuscript of The Tale of Genji is crucial for studying the transmission and readership of the work, as it shares textual similarities with the Genji Shaku from the Insei period and includes many Kamakura-period transcriptions. Scholars have noted that this manuscript features unique treatment expressions, especially in how it elevates the depiction of female characters. Focusing on the volume of Suetsumuhana, I compared the Yomei Bunko manuscript with others to identify its distinctive features and see if editorial guidelines on female character portrayal are followed. Findings indicate that the volume of Suetsumuhana contains unique textual variants, including ancient vocabulary and respectful language that elevates both Genji and Suetsumuhana. Despite these differences, descriptions from Genji’s perspective often belittle Suetsumuhana, suggesting that while the volume of Suetsumuhana of the Yomei Bunko manuscript has distinct characteristics, it ultimately adheres to a universal narrative framework. |
