“Withered Grass Roots”(1961) is considered one of Chin Shunshin’s representative works in early mystery fiction. However, while some regard its mystery format as belonging to the‘Pure mystery novel’category, research examining this work from the perspective of the prevailing trend in Japanese mystery literature at the time—the‘Social mystery novel’—has been scarce. In this paper, I aim to specifically analyze the mystery format of“Withered Grass Roots”and, through a comparison with Matsumoto Seicho’s“Points and Lines”(1958) and“Point Zero”(1959), reveal that while this work has its perceived shortcomings as a‘Pure mystery novel,’it also distinctly embodies characteristics of a‘Social mystery novel.’ |
