Panpingshan is a famous sight between the border of Zuoying and Nanzih district in Kaohsiung city. Its name “Panping” means incompleteness, its shape is like a half screen. By the lapse of time, there were different explanations of why Panpingshan lacked its half, and these explanations are regarded as the formation of Panpingshan’s legends. At the beginning of the 21st century, the government of Kaohsiung city published The Proverbs and Legends of Kaohsiung City and Legendary Kaohsiung, which specially recorded proverbs and Legends in Kaohsiung. According to the records, there were four kinds of legends, which explained why Panpingshan lacked its half, so I named “The Legends of Two Mountains’ Competition”, “The Legends of Testing People’s Hearts by Delicacies”, “The Legends of the Magical Cavern Producing Rice” and “The Legends of Two Immortals Competed for a Fairy”. This study traced the origins of these four kinds legends of Panpingshan’s formations. By the contemporary governmental publications, the Ching Dynasty local records, the folktale collection during the Japanese occupied period and the folktales in Taiwan after 1945 to find the origins of the Legends of Formation. |
