In our earlier article “The Kalewan Battle in Taiwanese History,” we have tested on a conceptual framework of how ethnic identity is politicized by using the Kalewan Battle wherein the Kalewan elites waged resistance against the reacted to Manchurian state's policy of pacifying the Indigenous Peoples in the frontiers. In this one, we shall start with a brief review of how some cannons of Taiwanese history have perceived these so-called “barbarian pests.” By drawing on official documents, we focus our analysis on the backgrounds of the policy of “Settling the Mountainous Area and Pacifying the Barbarians.” with a special interest in the views of those civil and military officers involved in the battle. We then conclude from the perspective of transitional justice on Indigenous history. |
