Facing the plight of pursuing freedom and democracy under the domestic authoritarian rule, intellectuals in different periods of time propagated the concepts of freedom, democracy and the rule of law through running newspapers or magazines. 1950s was a turbulent era in Taiwan. The tragic history began with 228 massacre, happened on Feb. 28, 1947, the Kuomintang regime suppressed the people's resistance, which killed at least thousands of civilians. However, in Mainland China, the KMT was defeated by the Communist Party of China, and retreated to Taiwan after 1949. In 1950s, the government continued to empower its ruling tricks by '' the Temporary Provisions on the Period of Mobilization for the Suppression of the Communist Rebellion'' and” the Martial Law''. As the democracy consciousness raised, the intellectuals advocated the concept of liberalism by initiating ''Free China'' magazine as well as opposed the Kuomintang government. During that period, China Youth Corps played an important role promoting the fanatic and dictatorial Party-State education, which was certainly reviewed and criticized by this magazine. The purpose of this essay is to explore the criticisms embedded in 1950s, which “Free China” has made in regard to the system, function, purpose and funding of the China Youth Corps. We do hope to provide the reference for Taiwan in promoting the transitional justice project through the analysis of the meaning behind as a basis for understanding authoritarian politics |
