This research is intended to extract outline paths from Chinese characters or scanned characters by a specifically developed method. To obtain the outlines of Chinese characters, a radial scan-connection method was designed by decoding the input file. The extracted paths were then converted into numerical coordinate data and were smoothed by using the Bezier Spline method. It is essential to realize that some peculiar data that smear the original data can be filtered out by applying some mathematical algorithms. Consequently, the generated data file can be run on AutoCAD tool script and be exported as a dxf file for application with computer software such as MasterCAM to perform the emulation of a milling path. At this stage, the emulated result can be transferred into NC code to achieve real milling. The proposed method solves the problem of conventional English CAM software that is unable to mill Chinese characters in real displays. In addition, it is noticeable that the current method can be also applied to scanned maps with the same success. The further application of this research is that the developed method can be applied to wire saw machines, electric discharge machines, and engraving machines, especially for personalized signatures or unique characters. |
