Although most scholars view Van Kejun's 嚴可均 ”Quan shanggu sandai qinhan sangio liuhao wen” (全上古三代秦漢三國六朝文 Complete Works of the Three Dynasties of Antiquity. Qin and Han Eras, Three Kingdoms, and Six Dynasties) as an anthology of belle-lettres集部, it value in tracing, identifying, and cataloguing medieval period masters and philosophers' works is under-appreciated. This paper draws mainly upon Yan's work to discuss the collection and cataloguing of medieval masters and philosophers' works. while emphasizing the documentary value of ”Qunshu zhiyao”群書治要 and ”Yilin”意林, two other works compiled in the Tang dynasty, and also touching upon the work of several Qing scholars in this area. |
