Enhancing the teaching and learning quality in higher education has become a critical issue faced by global higher educational institutions. To further sophisticate core curriculum courses and strengthen general education courses at universities, it is common for universities to employ teaching assistants (TA) to achieve this goal, however, the empirical research investigating the teaching assistants’ effectiveness and factors affecting it is rare. This research aims to explore TA's effectiveness and factors affecting it by exploiting the questioner data collected within a university in central Taiwan. Research results show that the TA's effectiveness in core curriculum and general education courses are both above average, but affecting factors are different. Based on research result, this research proposes practical suggestions like TAs need to develop their pedagogical knowledge, and universities need to consider the difference of core curriculum and general education when designing strategies to enhance teaching and learning quality in higher education. |
