STS(Science, Technology and Society/Science, Technology Studies)在國內算是一門新興的跨域研究,中文迻譯為「科學、技術與社會研究」、「科技與社會研究」或是「科技研究」。
STS (Science, Technology and Society/Science, Technology Studies) is a new interdisciplinary study in Taiwan. The concept of STS originated from England and became popular during 1980s in America. The coming into existence of this discipline indicates the removal of the discrepancy of liberal arts and technology, the so-called 'two cultures' in the past, and it also means the fusion of the two in an interdisciplinary view. This article begins with the discussion of the meanings of STS, and then to be followed by an example drawn from the interdisciplinary project of STS in VNU sponsored by the MOE to explore the fusion of the STS into the curriculum design and practice of the general education, with a view to 1) removing the discrepancy of the 'two cultures' and reflecting on the status of technological universities in the higher educational system in sense of whether there is a tension between the technological universities and the general universities as to the question if the former should focus on teaching activities while the latter on research; 2) answering the question that if technological universities are supposed to cultivate technical professionals, they should just stick to technology and even simply ignore liberal arts education; and 3) assessing the core of general education as not only the matter of teaching and learning of knowledge, but also the cultivation of character, values, ability of interdisciplinary dialogues and personal dispositions. Finally, the study suggests that general education should absorb STS courses in that it is the blending of varied disciplines as well as the fusion of different expertise. |
