The concept of assumed translation set forth by Toury provides a theoretical basis, on which pseudotranslations can be investigated. Therefore, contextualizing certain translational phenomenon can make us see the interdependencies of function, process and product of pseudotranslation generation. The pseudotranslation Carl Weter’s Educational Law is examined within such a framework. It shows that the reading and reception of such a pseudotranslation demonstrate a model of Chinese readers’ reception and production of translation, that is, its emergence is a result of the pseudotranslator manipulating the cultural mechanism to make the biggest profit. |
