In response to the challenges of population aging, a declining birth rate, rising healthcare costs, and healthcare workforce shortages, Taiwan has actively promoted digital healthcare initiatives in recent years to maintain the quality of care and mitigate the impact of workforce shortages. To support these efforts, the Joint Commission of Taiwan (JCT) established the Digital Healthcare Category within the National Healthcare Quality Award (NHQA) in 2014. The initiative aims to foster innovation, identify outstanding smart healthcare services, and facilitate the dissemination of successful digital healthcare solutions.
Through a structured evaluation process, the NHQA identifies and recognizes healthcare organizations that effectively apply digital technologies to healthcare management and service delivery. By showcasing successful cases and promoting benchmarking among healthcare organizations, the program encourages mutual learning and continuous improvement. Participating hospitals may progressively accumulate recognitions, advancing from addressing individual clinical challenges to integrating healthcare service workfows.
By integrating digital technologies, medical equipment, and service processes, hospitals can gradually establish a comprehensive smart hospital framework. Through a progressive development pathway from individual solutions to workfow integration and ultimately to institution-wide implementation, organizations may achieve NHQA Smart Hospital Certification. This article introduces the NHQA Smart Hospital Certification program, including its framework, eligibility requirements, historical trends, and certifcation classifcations.
