In the face of global climate change and the global net-zero transition, healthcare institutions bear the dual responsibility of safeguarding both public health and the environment. Taipei Tzu Chi Hospital, recipient of an Excellence Award in the Net-Zero Healthcare category of the National Healthcare Quality Award (NHQA), has implemented a “Sustainable Healthcare Model Integrating Smart Low-Carbon Strategies and Resource Circulation.” This model embeds ESG principles across healthcare services, engineering, nutrition, and governance. The hospital’s sustainability initiatives are rooted in the Tzu Chi humanistic philosophy of the “Four Great Missions and Eight Dharma Footprints” and are operationalized through cross-departmental collaboration. Key actions include waste reuse and recycling, a hospital-wide plant-based diet, intelligent energy-saving measures, green building practices, low-carbon commuting, and green procurement. Embracing the belief that “waste is simply a misplaced resource,” the hospital applies compassion and wisdom to extend material life and reduce the carbon footprint, while simultaneously enhancing healthcare quality. This article presents Taipei Tzu Chi Hospital’s comprehensive experience—from organizational culture and strategic implementation to outcome evaluation—demonstrating that when technology and humanistic values advance together, sustainable healthcare becomes not only feasible but an integral component of healthcare quality.
