The sustainability practices of Hualien Tzu Chi Hospital are rooted in patient-centered care and respect for life, translated into actionable strategies within the healthcare setting. In response to the unique challenges faced in eastern Taiwan—limited resources, high disaster risk, and complex healthcare needs—the hospital has incorporated sustainability into its governance framework. Starting with greenhouse gas inventory, the hospital prioritized addressing structurally high carbon emission sources. Without compromising infection control and care quality, it has promoted equipment upgrades and improvements in energy efficiency. Through institutional design and digital transformation—such as electronic prescriptions, intelligent health management systems, AI-assisted care, and air quality management platforms—the hospital has embedded carbon reduction actions into healthcare workflow management. Further efforts extend from green procurement and waste recycling to the adoption of a hospital-wide vegetarian culture, internalizing sustainability into daily practice. These initiatives have also strengthened the hospital’s resilience in the face of extreme climate events. The sustainability efforts of Hualien Tzu Chi Hospital are not isolated carbon reduction projects but represent a long-term path—from risk mitigation to impact adaptation—ultimately returning to the essence of healthcare.
