How China can be a game changer for the world is an imperative question to ponder. Rather than concentrating on material aspects, this paper focuses on a discursive perspective to study China’s global influence. Specifically, it explores China’s international narratives (with a focus on its grand project Belt and Road Initiative [BRI]) as a diplomatic strategy to alter global perception and their possible influences on the emerging world order. First, it reviews the literature concerning the changing world order and China’s growing influences; then, it moves on to theoretical content discussing the essence and power of discourse. To link theory to evidence, this paper adopts an analytical framework involving three levels of narrative (international system, national, and issue narratives) and three aspects of the communication process (narrative formation, projection/diffusion, and reception) to study China’s BRI narratives. Furthermore, it considers the implication of China’s BRI narratives for EU-China relations. |
