Tectonic is the poetic assembly of building materials in order to form an aesthetic, public and social environment. This course adheres to the concept of "learning by doing" and works with the community through design-build and construction practice. It not only allows professionals to understand the real needs of the community, but also enables community to raise aesthetic awareness of the surrounding environment. This design-build course is co-operated by Tamkang University and Xing-Ren Elementary School. Through the participatory design process, the course aims to trigger and coordinate school children’s physical perception, exploration and development in the campus activities. The environment therefore is regarded as the third teacher, and the campus is transformed into a field where students can explore themselves, observe the environment, and develop their will to learn actively. Through the guidance of participatory games, we gradually find children’s perception and imagination of their environment. As for college students, this is a practical learning journey of learning by doing. For the teachers in charge, how to face and effectively transform the sparks generated by the interaction between college students and schoolchildren into spatial and tectonic design, is a teaching research and learning process. The completed campus space installation will also challenge the principal, teachers and students to exert their imagination and creativity to make it become a part of the learning field and teaching activities.
