Qigu Salt Plant was one of the most important salt producing areas after World War II in Taiwan. However, in 1946, due to the typhoon, the salt field was greatly damaged. This made the living situation of the salt workers who were constrained under the contract of the salt company even more difficult. Therefore, except for some salt workers who chose to steal salt at risk of against the salt police system, some applied to the salt company to rent a fish farm to raise fish. However, fish farming was not only in conflict with the amount of salt production that the company wanted to achieve, but also damaged the salt production facilities, thus the conflicts between the salt company and the workers were arisen. Based on the interpretation of the Taiwan salt records in the Taiwan Historica, the author discusses the salt theft and the“salt-fish problem”caused by the livelihood of salt workers during the period from 1946 to 1949 in Taiwan, compares the“salt-fish problem”with the research of“The Contradictory Relationship Between Rice And Sugar: Development And Dependency In Colonial Taiwan, 1895-1945”by Chih-Ming Ka, and also expect further research on the nature of the“salt-fish problem”. |
