In the era of rapid artificial intelligence (AI) development, cultivating students’fundamental AI literacy has become a crucial task in higher education. General education courses, characterized by their interdisciplinary nature, provide an ideal platform for promoting AI literacy. However, many students from non-science and non-engineering backgrounds often lack motivation to learn AI-related content due to its difficulty. To enhance learning effectiveness, this study integrates game-based learning into a university-level AI general education course, applying the“iSMART”principles to enhance students’engagement and learning outcomes. The iSMART framework emphasizes Interest, Specificity, Measurability, Achievability, Relevance, and Time-boundedness, addressing the common issues of low motivation and limited attention span among Generation Alpha learners. In this study, an AI course was designed that combines iSMART principles with game-based learning. Through instructional practice and evaluation of learning outcomes, results show that students demonstrate high engagement, significantly improve their understanding of fundamental AI concepts, and experience strong enjoyment and a sense of achievement during the course. The results of this study confirm that integrating game-based learning with the iSMART principles effectively enhances students’learning motivation and provides practical value and strong potential for the design and promotion of AI literacy courses. |
