Driven by artificial intelligence (AI), big data, cloud computing, and globalization, knowledge transmission is undergoing a profound paradigm shift, posing structural challenges to higher education. The traditional education model centered on knowledge delivery can no longer meet the demands of industrial transformation and social needs. Future talents must possess critical thinking, interdisciplinary integration, digital literacy, collaboration skills, and innovative mindsets. This paper first reviews the historical foundations and contemporary challenges of general education, highlighting the difficulties faced by Taiwan’s general education in areas such as knowledge ecosystem transformation, AI literacy gaps, the repositioning of teachers and curricula, educational governance, and students’personal development. It then proposes five transformation strategies: strengthening students’academic foundation, establishing core AI literacy, promoting interdisciplinary projects and problem-based learning, enhancing faculty professionalism and curriculum resources, and reinforcing higher education governance and industry linkages. Finally, the paper argues that general education in the AI era must be repositioned—from supplementing knowledge to driving competence, from disciplinary separation to interdisciplinary integration, and from a purely technical orientation to balancing digital ethics with the humanistic spirit. The study concludes that only through systematic, collaborative, and globalized reforms can general education cultivate a new generation of citizens who combine humanistic concern, technological capability, and social responsibility, thereby securing a competitive advantage for Taiwan’s higher education in the global knowledge society. |
