This study examines the syntactic structure and transitivity of ad hoc four-character Sino-Japanese verbal nouns in modern Japanese. Using 1,200 examples drawn from the Balanced Corpus of Contemporary Written Japanese (BCCWJ) , it analyzes compounds formed by two two-character Sino-Japanese elements functioning as verbal nouns. Based on the syntactic relation between the two elements, the data are classified into five types: Subject–Predicate, Object–Predicate, Adverbial–Predicate, Compound-Predicate, and Attributive structures. The Adverbial–Predicate (37%) and Object–Predicate (35%) types are the most productive patterns. The results show that transitivity cannot be explained solely by morphology but is determined by semantic and syntactic relations between components. These compounds encapsulate grammatical relations within compact four-character forms, reflecting the information-condensing nature of Japanese lexical formation. The findings contribute to research on Japanese word formation and offer implications for language education and natural language processing. |
