Murakami Haruki's ''A Perfect Day for Kangaroos'' bears the traces of revision across 25 years, from its first publication in 1981 to the 2006 edition. This paper examines three editions through quantitative and grammatical analysis to determine what stylistic changes this long process of rewriting has produced. Quantitative analysis shows that a 21% increase in character count is concentrated in specific scenes, while the narration-to-dialogue ratio (ca. 60:40) remains stable across all three editions. Grammatical analysis identifies six changes, including shifts in sentence-final modality, reduction of speech-reporting verbs, functional transformation of negation, and reassignment of role language. All point in the same direction: a ''transfer of narrative agency''—the narrator's retreat and the characters' growing autonomy. |
