The article discusses Japanese loanwords containing ''non-ya-row contracted sounds,'' which are not included in the standard gojūon (五十音図) chart but frequently appear in katakana loanwords such as ''sofa'' (ソファ) and ''party'' (パーティー). The study focuses on these ''non-ya-row contracted sounds'' loanword sound words, primarily analyzing their writing orthography and semantic distribution categories listed in the 'Bunrui Goi Hyo' (1964) and its revised edition from 2004. For the period after 2004, the terms in the seventh edition of 'Koujien,' published in 2018 are used as references for interpretation. The findings reveal a rapid increase in the number of loanwords with ''non-ya-row contracted sounds,'' particularly those starting with ''ti'' (ティ) and ''di'' (ディ). These words span various semantic categories, with a notable rise in the ''sports'' category. In terms of writing trends, there is a shift toward simplifying these contracted sounds into more straightforward readings (''直音化''). However, despite this trend, ''non-ya-row contracted sounds'' have become indispensable in Japanese. The research concludes that its findings can contribute to Japanese language education by providing insights into the integration and evolution of loanwords within the language. |
