This article traces the revision process of Miyazawa Kenji’s“Kanba [I]”and, through genetic criticism, shows how“superimposition”shifts from an idealizing device to a critical one. This shift is driven by two factors: Kenji’s divided self-understanding, recorded in the Kujaku-jirushi Techōduring his engineering years, between shame over commerce and utopian longing; and a later memorandum on poetic reform, written on a separate sheet of stationery:“things to be eliminated: metaphor.”In the drafts, the dhāraṇībecomes a shepherd’s vernacular metaphor; inherited motifs—red, clouds, and head coverings—are rearranged; and the introduction of the“noble Arabian stallion”foregrounds the horse’s pedigree and commodity status. Repeated cloud-forms, wetness, and the reddish oaks converge to induce the hallucinated“blood horse”as an effect of the scenic sequence. The article shows how Kenji’s self-reflection, through self-critique in revision, becomes a“poetics of self-reflection,”giving the poem critical force toward reality, others, and the self. |
