In terms of gender stereotypes, men are typically perceived as strong and brave, while women are often viewed as gentle and delicate. Therefore, ''strength'' is considered a male trait, seemingly disconnected from women. In 1947, Kan Kikuchi published a work titled ''The Tale of Great Strength'' in the Shin-Osaka Newspaper, which introduced a series of stories about exceptionally strong individuals. Interestingly, aside from the narratives of two men at the end, the majority of the work is on four women. The stories of these four women can be traced back to Setsuwasyūin classical literature, spanning from the Heian to the Kamakura periods. These women come from specific regions, and their strength is passed down through the family heredity; some even owned land, with several stories mentioning sumo festivals and sumo wrestlers. This study focuses on seven works from four Setsuwasyū: ''Nihon Ryoiki'' ''Konjaku Monogatarisyū'' ''Uji Shūi Monogatari'' and ''Kokonchomonjū'' that depict strong women. It aims to outline the context of the stories, summarize their characteristics and differences, and explore how their character portrayals have evolved. |
