Since Fijian Prime Minister Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara proposed“the Pacific Way”at the UN General Assembly in 1970, its essence has evolved over more than half a century through responses from Pacific Island Countries (PICs) to the changing international environment. The focus has shifted from concentrating on the Pacific interior to applying it both internally and externally; its content has also changed from describing the peaceful transition from former Pacific colonies to independent states to addressing crises collectively. From the perspective of the region as a whole, PICs have declared utilizing“the Pacific Way”to tackle pressure from China and the United States. While the United States has recently released its National Security Strategy and 2026 National Defense Strategy, both documents did not explicitly mention the South Pacific. In order to confront the United States in the future, China seeks to significantly expand its influence in the Pacific. However, due to limited success, China has shifted to a strategy of gradually expanding its influence by dealing with PICs separately. The future competition between China and the United States in the Pacific and the resulting impact on“the Pacific Way”warrant close attention. |
