Baseball was originally introduced to Taiwan as a“Game for Japanese people”by the Japanese. However, even after the Japanese colonial rule following World War II, baseball continued in a new form as a“Game for Taiwanese people.” This paper focuses on the period from the formation of Taiwan’s first baseball team in 1904 to the relocation of the Chinese Nationalist Party (Kuomintang) government to Taiwan in 1950. Based on materials on the industrial structure and income at the time, as well as applying sociologist Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of habitus, this paper analyzes the cultural and social strata involved in baseball. The analysis reveals that baseball in Taiwan underwent the following transformations: 1) Initially, it was originally the“Game for Rulers”played only by the Japanese people; 2) With the spread of education, it became a“high-status sport”practiced by the upper class of Taiwanese society; 3) In the late 1930s, baseball gradually became more popular and a customary structure for practicing baseball was established among Taiwanese people; and 4) After World War II, people in Taiwan came to understand baseball as a“Game for Taiwanese”and played it. |
