Wu Jun Sui Hua Ji Li (吳郡歲華紀麗, Wújùn SuìhuáJìlì), compiled by Yuan Jinglan (袁景瀾, also known as Yuan Xuelan袁學瀾), is a twelve-juan work documenting the seasonal customs and local milieu of Suzhou. Organized by calendar months and structured around seasonal festivals and popular sayings, the text draws extensively on historical sources and incorporates poems by earlier writers and by the author himself, thereby constructing a rich representation of local customs and everyday life. This article examines the work’s compilation methods and documentary character, and employs the concept of fūdo (風土) to analyze representations of climate, water systems, and agricultural practices. It further explores depictions of common people’s lives and social observation, demonstrating how regional knowledge and local experience intersect in the text. Through this analysis, the study reveals Qing-dynasty literati’s grounded engagement with lived realities and the social space of the Wu region. |
