The number of Su Shih's friends in his lifetime was about one thousand and three hundred. Yet, the friendship between Su Shih and Huang T’ing-chien was very important in terms of literary history of Sung dynasty. Among the four scholars of the Su school, Hung was the most exceptional one in moral and literary achievements. Therefore, Huang was the head of the so-called four scholars and earned a great deal of attention of Su Shih. Su and Huang are juxtaposed in the history of Chinese literature. This article tries to study the friendship between the two and its related poems, essays, and historical events, because these materials record the beginning of their important and everlasting friendship. |
