The relationship between the well-known Qing scholar Dai Zhe (戴震) (1724-1777) and Jiang Yong (江永)(1681-1762) aroused much discussion since the former's death to the present day. There are three different points of view. The first is that Jiang and Dai held a master and pupil relationship which Dai betrayed and disrespected Jiang in his late years, the second is that Dai maintained the relationship and respected Jiang throughout his life, and the last one is that their relationship was something between master-puple and friends. Now the debate may come to an end owing to the newly discovered scattered article which Dai wrote in congratulations of Jiang's 70 years old birthday. It definitely shows that Dai held a formal relationship of master and pupil with Jiang at that time, which he betrayed and disrespected Jiang in his late years. |
