This research analyzes Xia Cheng-tao’s comments on six of Li Qing-zhoa’s Ci poems included in his Lun Ci Jue Ju. There are three findings. First, the six Ci poems in question are presented in the “chapter-after-chapter” style. Six chapters were included. Xia first commented on Li’s courage and insights, then her patriotic sentiment, her literary attainments and views towards Ci poetry and her character. He concluded by commenting positively on her literary achievements. Secondly, this paper proposes that Xia prioritized “character” as the main criteria for commenting on Ci poets. He especially admired those who demonstrated clear patriotic devotion to the home country in times of turmoil. Thirdly, in Wu Wu-wen’s annotation of Lun Ci Jue Ju, which was composed of “Themes” and “Notes”, there appears to be problems with parts of the “Notes” that were either absent, unclear or incorrect. Although Wu’s work has made a substantial contribution to our understanding of Lun Ci Jue Ju, scholars should be aware of possible limitations when drawing on Wu’s work as source for citation. |
