This study examined the 104 cases of school refusal children who were diagnosed by National Taiwan University Hospital in the past decade (1977-1986). The analysis revealed that most of the cases were concentrated in certain grade levels (grade 1, and grade 7) who had an acute onset and neurotic tendencies precipitated by separation anxiety (grade 1) and by school-related factors (grade 7). Testing the Atkinson's heterogeneity concept of school refusal, this study also disclosed that the causes of school refusal varied significantly with age and the type of onset. |
