This study utilized the newly translated Chinese version of the Manual of Five-Minute Speech Sample (CFMSS) based on the Five-Minute Speech Sample (FMSS). The FMSS instrument was used to collect twelve (12) recorded Speech samples provided by Taiwanese subjects and analyzed by two rater groups: one from the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) and the other a group of trained Taiwanese psychiatric social workers. The study demonstrated the validity of the instrument for determining High Emotional Expression (HEE) in the context of Chinese and Taiwanese discourse and expression. The first study was followed by analysis of the effectiveness of the Chinese instrument, CFMSS, in a large sample of one hundred and eighteen (118) subjects and the utility of the instrument in concurrent study of Family Caregiver Burden and Family Rejection of the Family Patient. Rater consistency was examined by random error coefficients: r=.79*.89 for ''Criticism''; r=.82*.86 for ''Emotional Overinvolvement''. A standardization Manual was completed and is applicable for a study of Chinese populations, and could also serve as a reliable instrument with demonstrated cross-cultural validity. |
