This paper attempts to replicate a previous study that discrepancy between actual and undesired selves conceived in terms of salient identity is a strong predictor of depressive experiences among Chinese early adolescents. In addition, the predictive power of discrepancy between self-elements conceived in terms of a non-salient identity was also explored. The study adopted a prospective design with 86 Primary six and Form one students in Hong Kong as the sample. The results support the previous findings, and somewhat unexpectedly, self-discrepancy in the non-salient identity is predictive of agitation and performance deficit. Implications for helping Chinese early adolescents with depressive symptoms are discussed. |
