Patients with schizophrenia suffer not only psychiatric symptoms but also the stereotypic misunderstanding from the general public. The purpose of this study was to explore the coping strategies that patients used in experiencing stigma circumstances. Nine patients participated in this phenomenological study through in-depth interviews. Interview data were analyzed by using Colaizzi's method of analysis. Results showed that patients applied the following coping strategies in stigmatic experiences: concealing and retreat, seeking for acceptance, adjusting inner perspectives, and facing the reality of illness. It indicated that patients applied effective coping strategies in buffering negative circumstances. The results of this study can be used to enhancing psychiatric health professionals' understanding of patients' coping strategies. It provides the basis for designing health education and interventions to facilitating patients' self-understanding and self-acceptance. |
