This study treats the coparenting pattern as one kind of family culture. Coparenting events are defined by situations in which at least one parent advances a parenting goal, and the event involves both parents and the child. This study constructs four main coparenting patterns: cooperative-consentaneous, polarized-consentaneous, polarized-divergent and competitive-hostile. Covert consensus and overt cooperation, two dimensions in both parental parenting interactions are used to assess these patterns. A third dimension labeled parental engagement is also used in assessing coparenting interactions. Content analysis of coparenting events in eight cases of families participating in family therapy for at least ten sessions revealed some important theoretical and practical implications in the four constructed coparenting patterns, especially with polarized-divergent coparenting and parental intrusive engaging practices. |
