This research is to study the emotional complex between married women in two generations. Data were first collected from a focus group of 5 participants from the elder generation. In-depth interviews were then conducted with 35 women in 12 families. Results indicated that women in elder generation usually have doubts about the value of their self. Their feelings toward daughter and daughter-in-law are mixed. Elder married women show three kinds of emotional complexes: ambivalence, guilt, and being excluded. The feeling of ambivalence is based upon intergenerational affectionate connection, mixed with frustrations resulted from intergenerational interaction. The feeling of guilt is related to intergenerational role expectation. It usually happens when someone does not provide supports while obligated to. The feeling of being excluded comes from boundary ambiguity between self and family systems. It is a feeling of disorientation after being rejected by another family system. |
