This essay attempts to understand the definition of“public collection”and its changes by analyzing the previous editions and works of Skulptur Projekte Münster. After research and field visits, it was discovered that Skulptur Projekte Münster was established out of Münster’s conservative attitude towards modern sculpture. From its early days, Skulptur Projekte focused on how to curate modern sculptures in public spaces and how to introduce international modern art to the citizens of Münster. Its curatorial strategy and concept have transformed to emphasize conceptual art and participatory art at the end. Over the past half century, it can be observed that the definition of“public”has also changed. This essay not only understands the layout of the urban space of the Skulptur Projekte, but also understands how it selects the works that should be preserved and the current status of their preservation. |
