In recent years, the growing global visibility of Taiwan has led to increasing interest in Taiwanese language programs—Mandarin and Taiwanese (Hokkien)—across Europe. Nevertheless, European universities still face multiple challenges in establishing and sustaining such programs. This study takes two German institutions—Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (LMU) and the Technical University of Munich (TUM)—as case studies to examine the current institutional frameworks and challenges of Taiwanese language education. The research employs document and content analysis of university regulations and course structures, supplemented by student evaluation data, and approaches the topic from the perspectives of local German students, international students, and Mandarin instructors. The findings highlight both the potential and difficulties of developing Taiwanese language programs within the European higher education context and propose feasible strategies for future promotion and academic cooperation. |
