Dr. Yang Szu-Wei was the first university president in Taiwan to receive the“National Distinguished Teacher Award”in 2013. This honor was bestowed upon him for his successful transformation of the National Taichung University of Education into a major center for teacher education, guiding the reform of teacher education in Taiwan and making its development more professional. Dr. Yang Szu-Wei served as an elementary school teacher for nearly a decade. In 1990, he earned a Ph.D. in Education from the University of Tokyo, Japan. He later joined the National Taiwan Normal University, where he leveraged his expertise in comparative education and higher education to lead numerous research projects on secondary education reform in Taiwan and successfully manage continuing and extension education programs. From 2006 to 2014, he served as the president of National Taichung University of Education, successfully transforming it into a key university for teacher education. In the 2011 university evaluation, the university achieved full accreditation across five dimensions. Drawing on his expertise in teacher education and school leadership, President Yang Szu-Wei also led several national reform projects for teacher education in Taiwan. He assisted the Ministry of Education in publishing documents such as the“White Paper on Teacher Education in the Republic of China”and the“Guidelines for Teacher Professional Standards in the Republic of China.”Additionally, he chaired the ''Elementary School Teacher Education and Utilization Alliance'' project, integrating the resources of various teacher education universities. For these contributions, he is regarded as a reformer and practitioner of teacher education. Dr. Yang Szu-Wei is an educational practitioner deeply devoted to Buddhism and committed to practicing the Bodhisattva Path for nurturing a new generation of teachers. In 2026, the Taiwan Education Research Institute is scheduled to confer upon the“Lifetime Achievement Award for Educational Research.”This award further recognizes his academic achievements in comparative education, secondary education, higher education, and teacher education, and highlights his success in using his professional knowledge to transform National Taichung University of Education and innovate teacher education in Taiwan. |
