Professor Tieh-Hsiung Wu devoted his life to educational research, information and computer education, and policy advancement, contributing substantially to elementary, secondary, and higher education. His influence extended from university teaching and normal school administration to senior decision-making roles in the Ministry of Education. His contributions remain exemplary. During his tenure at National Taiwan Normal University (1980–1992), he directed the Computer Center, spearheading campus informatization. Furthermore, he founded the Department of Information and Computer Education, thus cultivating Taiwan’s first generation of information and computer education teachers, and guided elementary and secondary schools in adopting information-based teaching, computer-assisted learning, and administrative computerization, thereby laying the foundation for Taiwan’s digital education. As President of Tainan Teachers College (1992–2001), Professor Wu regarded talent as the lifeblood of the institution. He actively recruited alumni and young faculty, established the Graduate Institute of Information and Computer Education, and oversaw major campus construction projects—including the Yay-in Building, Wen-hui Building, and athletic field—thus laying the groundwork for the college’s eventual transition to a university. Later, as Administrative Vice Minister of Education and Founding Director of the National Academy for Educational Research (2001–2003), he played a central role in major educational reforms, including the development of the Grade 1–9 Curriculum, the Basic Competence Test for junior high graduates, and multiple admission pathways to senior high schools. He further facilitated revisions to the Teacher Education Act and the Teacher Act, striving to uphold rationality and safeguard professional integrity during a period of rapid reform. Professor Wu was not only a pioneer and founder of information and computer education but also a visionary leader who advanced Taiwan’s educational frontiers with wisdom and foresight. He nurtured talent with dedication and guided educational policy with steadfast commitment. His lifelong work established the foundations of modern education in Taiwan and inspired generations of educators and leaders. |
