He Han Lang Yong Ji Si Zhu is a six-volume work compiled by the monk Xinjiu of Kohfuku-ji Temple, completed in the late Heian period. It provides annotations on the Chinese poetry and prose in the He Han Lang Yong Ji. Previous studies have shown that Xinjiu often relied on reference works such as Chu Xue Ji, Meng Qiu, and Li Jiao Bai Er Shi Yong Zhu. He also used the Xiu Wen Dian Yu Lan from the Northern Qi dynasty, a text now lost. However, through the Tai Ping Yu Lan, which preserved its contents, we can still identify Xinjiu’s citations of the Xiu Wen Dian Yu Lan. By examining related sources, this study find that Xinjiu indirectly cited many passages from the Xiu Wen Dian Yu Lan. This work was widely used in medieval Japan across different fields, but its loss has made it difficult to fully understand how it was employed. Through this comprehensive study of the relationship between the He Han Lang Yong Ji Si Zhu and the Xiu Wen Dian Yu Lan, we can better understand how the latter was used in commentary. This also clarifies the outlines of its influence in Japan, in a more substantial and vivid manner. |
