On January 31, 2023, under the leadership of the Hakka Affairs Council, the wonderful Taiwanese Hakka literature officially debuted and stepped out onto the world literature through the results of the“2021-2023 Hakka Lit-erary Works Translation and Overseas Promotion”program. Wintry Night, a condensed English translation of Taiwanese Hakka writer Li Qiao’s well-known masterpiece Cold Night Trilogy is elected as the subject, which is also going to be nominated by the Hakka Affairs Council for the Nobel Prize in Literature. The textual analysis method is adopted to sort out the unique characteristics and the representation of the exclusive Hakka culture code from Taiwanese Hakka literature in the context of multi-contextual historical contexts. The breakthrough of Chen Peifeng’s research on the linguistic hy- bridity of Taiwanese literature and Homi K. Bhabha’s“cultural hybridity”for postcolonial culture are applied. The purpose of this study is to explore the characteristics of Hakka literature under the cross-context and multi-contextu-al intersection of the Qing Empire, Japan, and the KMT government, and the representation of the multilingual and cultural characteristics of Hakka liter-ature interpreted through translation. The research intends to apply Lawrence Venuti’s“minority translation”and Roland Barthes’s“Elements of Semiol-ogy”to make up for the gap between language and culture. It is hoped that through the translation of Hakka literature, not only are the multilingual and cultural characteristics of Taiwan maintained but also the reading community of Hakka literature is expanded. In the long run, Hakka literature moves to-wards the road of world literature in a colorful manner. |
