「庭」は大正十一年七月に『中央公論』に発表された芥川龍之介の短編小説である。旧家である中村家が没落していく様子、道楽生活を経て戻ってきた次男があるきっかけで家の象徴である庭の復旧作業に取り組んだプロセスが作品の焦点とされている。 五年後に発表された「玄鶴山房」は芥川晩年の傑作だと高く評価され、よく研究されて来た。神田由美子は「「玄鶴山房」は、その構成や主題から考えても「庭」の後編たる傑作だ」と、両作品が緊密に繋がっていることを指摘している。とはいえ、「玄鶴山房」に較べ、「庭」は研究者からそれ程注目されてはいない。 そこで、神田氏の両作品の関連性に対する捉え方に従い、両作品の構成や主題の繋がりに着目し、そのモチーフを再確認した上、「庭」の芥川文学における位置付け、更にその芸術性を見出すことを本論文の主旨とする。 "Niwa" was published in Chuo Koron by Ryunosuke Akutagawa as a short story in July 1922. The story focused on the declining circumstances of Nakamura family as an old established family and the process that the second son who returned after a dissolute living and began to engage in a restoration work for the symbolic garden of the family owing to a catalyst. "Genkakusanbo" was published five years thereafter and highly appreciated as Akutagawa's masterpiece in his later years. Regarding "Genkakusanbo", in view of the structure and theme, Kanda Yumiko pointed out that it was a masterpiece as the sequel of "Niwa", and the two works were closely related to each other, Nevertheless, "Niwa" has not received as much attention from researchers compared to "Genkakusanbo." Therefore, the study focused on the connection between the structures and themes of the two works in accordance with the comprehension of association from Kanda, it reaffirmed the motif, and examined the positioning of "Niwa" in Akutagawa's literature as well as its artistry as the main purpose of the study. |
