To pursue the boost of their inferior social status, the prostitutes in the Tang dynasty keep a frequent and close contact with scholars at that time, which contributes to the surge emergence of a plethora of stunning ''prostitute fictions.'' Li Wa by Shing-Jian Bai delineates a story of a prostitute. At the end of the story, the father of Jeng breaks the long-standing myth in the Tang dynasty that the two parties of an marriage should be of equal status as well as family background. Likewise, Su San by Meng-Luang Feng in the Ming dynasty has similar plot, which unveils the love story between a prostitute, Su Sen, and Wang Jing-Luang. In the beginning, Li Wa is the one who commits crimes quite often, but finally she regrets. But the situation of Su Sen and Wang Jing-Luang, who always have the same standpoint, is totally different. Hence, the two prostitutes have different experiences and hold different beliefs towards love despite their similar background. They both have a happy ending. However, the similarity as well as discrepancy of their mental states, personal beliefs, and the results of their whole life are worth further discussion. |
