China and Thailand have maintained a longstanding trade relationship which was further strengthened in 2002 with the signing of FTA for agricultural products, aimed to ease trade restrictions. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has introduced new challenges. This study explores the role of local Thai middlemen in the mangosteen export, focusing on their interactions with Chinese and Thai merchants and the impact of political and trade policies on their operations. The research employs a qualitative approach, utilizing field surveys, and in-depth interviews with local middlemen in Nakhon Si Thammarat in 2023. The study found that these bilateral agreements and NTBs have greatly impacted fruit trade, shaping market access and trade policies. China has become the largest importer of Thai mangosteen. Meanwhile, Chinese merchants hold significant power over local Thai middlemen by setting prices and determining market access with more substantial financial resources and connections, leaving the middlemen with limited negotiating power. Even though key findings indicate that the middlemen are considered an important intermediary player in the local area. In the aftermath of COVID-19, supply chains were disrupted. Policy interventions can improve the efficiency and fairness of the export process by correcting power imbalances and supporting smaller groups such as community enterprises. |
