The Chinese rare books of National Central Library hold a pivotal position in global civilization. As early as the end of 2000, the library began planning to establish a Union Catalog of Chinese Rare Books database. In 2005, it launched its first Chinese rare books digitization project in collaboration with the Library of Congress in the United States. These two international initiatives—the Union Catalog and the Digitization of Rare Books—have gradually advanced its global collection plan for Chinese Rare Book literature. This paper reviews the significant achievements of the past 25 years while also examining similar international digitization projects, including Chinese rare book resources in the United States, China, Japan, and Korea. From the perspectives of library catalog systems and digital library, the study provides insights of future direction for NCL’s global collection plan for Chinese rare books, and recommends developing a knowledge system of Chinese rare books. |
