Hsin-Hui Lin’s science fiction novel, Contactless Intimacy, depicts a future world dominated by AI where human touch is forbidden. The concept of cyborgs is materialized through the emergence of human-machine pairings. By merging with bio-partners, individuals form a novel type of cyborg existence, with their bodies intimately connected to digital data. This paper will use Contactless Intimacy as a case study to delve into the concept of cyborgs in the novel and the issues it raises. Firstly, I will analyze the definition and characteristics of cyborgs in the novel, comparing them to traditional concepts of cyborgs. Secondly, I will explore the social roles of cyborgs in the novel and their impact on interpersonal relationships and identity. Finally, from a philosophical perspective, the paper will examine the fundamental questions about humanity raised by the existence of cyborgs in the novel. |
