Ye Hong’s poetry collection, with its candid introspection into her mental state and ambivalent evasion yet engagement with death, demonstrates how the poet uses writing to combat depression, resisting the silence of a fragmented self and channeling creative energy to counter the death drive of melancholic illness. This aspect has been brilliantly analyzed in the seminal work of Professor Li Kui-Yun. Though the poet ultimately ended her life due to illness, the self-reflection in her poetry continues to offer healing power to future readers. This paper attempts to construct a pathway through which readers gain strength from Ye Hong’s poetry, adopting the lens of the reading process and integrating methodologies from bibliotherapy and reader-response theory. |
